Xiaomi Mi A2 - The new Nexus era?

One year later, Xiaomi launched the second iteration of Mi A series in Madrid, Spain and it followed Google's footstep by releasing dual model - Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. Just a simple introduction of its counterpart in China as Mi A2 is Mi 6X while Mi A2 Lite is Redmi 6 Pro.

Mi A2 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC chipset and comes in three variants - 32GB or 64GB with 4GB RAM and 128GB with 6GB RAM, a user non-removable 3,010 mha battery with supported Quick Charge 3.0 via USB C port, dual rear camera setup which is a huge upgrade over its previous generation. No 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD slot on Mi A2.

On my review unit is the 64GB variant and out of the box a whopping 24% was used (~15GB).

Like its predecessor, Mi A2 support Google's Android One program which means Xiaomi adapting the stock Android OS with Xiaomi's own camera application loaded inside.

The Android OS which Mi A2 is running on Oreo 8.1 out of the box and it does support Project Treble that allows Mi A2 and it's small brother A2 Lite to receive faster updates.

The battery life is considered above average, on the day to day use without gaming could easy last entire day (i.e. social media, listening to music and some web surfing).

Mi A2 has a 5.99" inch 18:9 FHD+ display panel at 2160x1080 with a pixel density of 403. Outdoor viewing visibility is acceptable as personally find that the usual Xiaomi's automatic brightness algorithm lies inside as the auto brightness is offset when it outdoor.

The camera it's Mi A2 biggest upgrade and it a dual rear camera setup - 20MP main camera along with 12MP for portrait mode. The main 20MP rear camera has the Super Pixel technology when taking a photo it combining four pixels into one large pixel to offer a clearer and sharper image during day shot and low light images.

The front camera uses the same 20MP rear's sensor and it same technology said to offer AI portrait and beauty mode and along front facing led light.

Photos quality from Mi A2 is one of the best among Xiaomi phones and is equipped with full Sony IMX sensors. Auto HDR detection, colors, saturation, and details are on point during day shots, while into low light struggled as commonly seen in most phones. Portrait mode has improved as the edge detection looks accurate yet sharp looking.

Here are some sample shots:

Verdict?
I would recommend the Xiaomi Mi A2 for it near to stock Android experience with an almost superior camera setup, without sacrificing your moo-lah! It one of the few phones that a phone that guaranteed the next big OS upgrade.

OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G Review

When comes to branding - OPPO Reno is often linked to out of the box design and camera-centric features and my last Reno phone was the OPPO Reno2 that launched back in 2019 which featured a more immersive screen and the iconic shark-fin style pop-up camera. Pocophone F1 - Back to Xiaomi's Old Roots?

Back in the days, Xiaomi is known for offered the flagship specifications at a very attractive price point. Such as the Mi 3 when it came to Singapore it's around SGD$419 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC.  Looking at the Pocophone F1's overall built quality and the specification being offered, it greatly does reminds me of the good old days. The Pocophone F1 was targeted to the India market mainly due to lack of flagship phones at a reasonable price and another reason is the influx of mid rangers. Poco F1 equipped with top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB of RAM and comes in 3 variants - 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The phone also supports a microSD slot and along with a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, it lacks NFC for wireless payment and it's a plastic construction phone. In short, it is a watered down of Xiaomi's Mi 8 in terms of built quality and its premiums. The phone comes in 3 colors - Navy Blue, Black, and Red. For c...

Huawei Mate 30 - A glimpse of Google-less phone?

To be honest, out of so many phones with great cameras. The one that caught my attention the most are from Huawei as they partnership with Leica and love the way how Huawei paired up with various type camera sensors onto it. Then came along the infamous widely ban that affects Huawei that limits them from business dealings with United States companies. That includes those Google services on the phone. Huawei quickly reacts and building up their operating system - Hongmeng and it owns Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). But such a ban does not affect Huawei's customer-based, people finding a way to install Google services onto it and it does works smoothly (besides no Google Pay and Netflix limited of Widevine rating). Let's dive back to the phone topic itself - Huawei Mate 30. At first, I was sceptical about it as heard rave opinions on services unable to run on it. After months of thoughts, I'm ready to jump on board and found a way to install GMS. No issue with google sync ...
