Huawei Mate 30 - A glimpse of Google-less phone?

To be honest, out of so many phones with great cameras. The one that caught my attention the most are from Huawei as they partnership with Leica and love the way how Huawei paired up with various type camera sensors onto it.

Then came along the infamous widely ban that affects Huawei that limits them from business dealings with United States companies. That includes those Google services on the phone. Huawei quickly reacts and building up their operating system - Hongmeng and it owns Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). But such a ban does not affect Huawei's customer-based, people finding a way to install Google services onto it and it does works smoothly (besides no Google Pay and Netflix limited of Widevine rating).

Let's dive back to the phone topic itself - Huawei Mate 30. At first, I was sceptical about it as heard rave opinions on services unable to run on it. After months of thoughts, I'm ready to jump on board and found a way to install GMS. No issue with google sync issues as my daily operation with Google application works.

The reasons why I choose regular Mate 30 over the Pro are flat screen and headphone jack as it a good rounder phone to me. It has the same new and improves processor - Kirin 990, an OLED 6.62 inches display that comes at FHD+, 128GB onboard storage and 8GB of RAM that supports Huawei's NM SD card. Software running on Android 10 with EMUI 10 skin, it felt cleaner as compared to the previous version.

Personally felt that Huawei phone has the best battery life among most OEMs that being said the Mate 30 has a built-in 4200 mAh. What I observed from the standby time are ridiculously good as it dropped 1~2% overnight on 4G or Wifi mode whereas battery does last over 2 days with moderate usage.

The phone display is a 6.62 inch 1080p AMOLED panel and the colour looks punchy and vibrant. It houses an under-display fingerprint sensor which does unlock quick and a relatively tiny notch with front single 24MP camera that does 2D face unlock while the PRO does 3D facial recognition.

The triple camera setup on the Huawei Mate 30 - a 40MP SuperSensing camera with f/1.8, 16MP ultra wide-angle at f/2.2 and an 8MP telephoto lens at f/2.4 with OIS. As for the front camera is a 24MP f/2.0 sensor.

The photo quality looks rather saturated and depends on lighting condition an excellent image output can be achievable. Personally prefer to switch on the AI mode and then tweak some setting to make the image looks rather decent. Night mode looks rather good as it took a few seconds to capture surroundings detail.

Sample Shots

Verdict? For one who wants a phone that works wonder might need to look elsewhere as the phone does not come with Google Services. Although can be installed, Google App like Google Pay does not work as it needs some security features. For explorer like us, it does not matter.

Would recommend to someone with the price points as for now (based on street shops) and wants a good feature-packed camera that achieves great shots and multiple modes to play with.

Pocophone F1 - Back to Xiaomi's Old Roots?

Back in the days, Xiaomi is known for offered the flagship specifications at a very attractive price point. Such as the Mi 3 when it came to Singapore it's around SGD$419 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC.  Looking at the Pocophone F1's overall built quality and the specification being offered, it greatly does reminds me of the good old days. The Pocophone F1 was targeted to the India market mainly due to lack of flagship phones at a reasonable price and another reason is the influx of mid rangers. Poco F1 equipped with top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 6GB of RAM and comes in 3 variants - 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The phone also supports a microSD slot and along with a 3.5mm headphone jack. However, it lacks NFC for wireless payment and it's a plastic construction phone. In short, it is a watered down of Xiaomi's Mi 8 in terms of built quality and its premiums. The phone comes in 3 colors - Navy Blue, Black, and Red. For c...
